The Department of Human Services realizes the need in strengthening families and marriages and to this end has set aside $180,000 of ARRA CSBG funding to qualified faith-based and community organizations to do the following: 1. Provide mentoring support to single mothers with sons. 2. Provide support and focus groups for non-custodial fathers in an effort to encourage paternal parenting. 3. Provide marriage enrichment workshops. 4. Provide promotion and support to the Territory’s Family Month activities in the month of October. 5. Provide counseling to families experiencing problems and requiring counseling by an order of the court. 6. Convene a family conference celebrating marriage, parenting, and family accomplishments.

Achievements:
  • Mentoring support was offered to single mothers
  • Provided support and focus groups for non-custodial fathers in an effort to encourage paternal parenting
  • Provided marriage enrichment workshops
  • Promoted and supported the Territory’s Family Month activities in the month of October
  • Counseling to families experiencing problems and requiring counseling by an order of the court was offered
  • Convened a family conference celebrating marriage, parenting, and family accomplishments
  • Group sessions focused on specific parenting strategies with information being provided by the Parenting Mentors, or when appropriate by an invited topic expert.
  • The program hosted at least three Community Forums with the purpose of providing an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and concerns and to establish a dialogue between agency representatives, mother and fathers.
  • Family Counseling was provided to families referred by the courts. A family counselor in the Marriage and Family Support Project Program worked with families, developed a care plan, and provided referrals to community based support services.
  • Marriage Enrichment Workshops were held during the course of the project, with at least one of these workshops provided from a secular perspective.
